ATHI-PATRA RUGA PERFORMANCE @ MICHAELIS GALLERY, IN 3 PARTS OVER 3 DAYS

DAY 1 /// TUESDAY 02-AUG

DAY 2 /// WEDNESDAY 03-AUG

DAY 3 /// THURSDAY 04-AUG

I took the pics above over the last three days at each of Athi's performances. Obviously i loooooooved the work and i wish i was an art writer so i could use words to share the experience with you if you missed it, however i am not, so askies skattie but i'm just gonna copy and paste a bit of the press release for the show so you can get a bit of background. Besides, i am terribly exhausted, it has been an intense three days. Although the performances took no longer than 5 minutes each they were rather emotionally challenging, each one required a decent amount of tequila afterwards. Enjoy.

Press release:

Editions for ArtThrob has for some time been commissioning prints from leading South African artists. It has proved a successful way to fund ArtThrob, one of the leading websites on Contemporary South African art, enabling it to remain completely independent of the pressures that advertisers can place on content and editorship.

This year, Editions for ArtThrob has invited a select group of young contemporary South African artists to make a limited edition portfolio of prints for sale at the Joburg Art Fair in September this year in support of the online ArtThrob.

Athi-Patra Ruga is one such young South African artist who, in line with his interest in “subverting and exposing the body in relation to structures, ideologies and politics”, has chosen to insert his body directly into the print making process. Tackling the print convention that is charaterised by a matrix and a press, Ruga activates his own body as both image matrix and printing press in a three-part performance that will see the live creation of the print within a gallery context.
