THIS MIU MIU VIDEO, STARRING GABRIELLE UNION. WOW!

JOULE CITY ARTS INCUBATOR /// A CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Resonance Bazar invites unemployed and freelance artists to apply for a place in the
6-month Joule City Arts Incubator in central Cape Town, a graduate development programme
taking place from 25 February 2013 to 15 August 2013.
Joule City Arts Incubator is an intensive internship programme for arts graduates, focused on
skills development and content production that supports graduate to career transition. The
Programme challenges young, emerging professional artists to transform their theory into
practice, in a hub/studio working environment of self-firing and inter-disciplinary collaboration.
The Incubator encourages new processes of learning and knowledge production. It delivers skills
development and training in business entrepreneurship, accredited arts administration and
applications of various technology platforms. The programme is designed to equip participants
with the necessary tools to navigate the socio-economic, political and aesthetic complexities of
the creative and cultural industries.
The call is open to artists as creative entrepreneurs, who are interested in collectively exploring
the dissolution of boundaries between art forms, engaging in research, critical debate and
collaborative practice and sharing in the knowledge pool that will comprise of both theoretical and
practical applications. The three incubators are:
  • Performa Arts Incubator
  • Visual and Aural Cultures Incubator
  • African Knowledge Incubator

The Performa Arts Incubator explores the catalytic relationship between fashion, performance,
art history, print media, digital publishing and popular culture, and its existence in commercial art
house and mainstream society. Knowledge production will take the form of both a Performance
Art work and Fashion Publication. Participants will create the next issue of the Skattie Print
Editorial, a fashion magazine showcasing the new school of South African creative thought and
expression, which decisively challenges the wear and tear of the contemporary fashion publishing
industry. Participants will also create a new Performance Art work, built on the framework of
understanding how a Performance Art work is conceived, how a prospectus is put together to
present to producers, how to present oneʼs brand of art in media and publishing, the discipline of
execution and ways to renegotiate aspects of performance art and the greater collaborations that
the medium demands, such as video, public intervention, design, fashion, art.

The Visual and Aural Cultures Incubator works towards publishing online and in print, high end
content of commissioned essays, texts, conversations and interviews with composers, sound
designers, sound-artists, musicians, theorists and audio innovators - stimulating an awareness of
individuals who boldly create music and soundscapes beyond entertainment. Participants will
elicit diverse opinions and critical commentaries across the full gamut of music and audio cultures
in Southern Africa, putting together a multimedia archive of texts, MP3s, audio, video and
photographic galleries, as well as producing an immersive surround sound and video Installation
of researched material, suggesting new ways of listening and perceiving aural and visual cultures.

The African Knowledge Incubator will not focus on “indigenous”, “ancestral” or “traditional”
knowledge. It will also not rely on debate initiated and conducted outside the African
Continent. The African Knowledge Incubator will gather and record present-day know-how and
know-why from contemporaries living in Africa today; more specifically from artists as conduits
and articulators of knowledge: the known, the unknown and sometimes the unspeakable. Using
sound, video, web-tools and art as a common vernacular, it will generate content in the form of
podcasts - free, all-access knowledge to share.

The Joule City Arts Incubator Project team includes Kadiatou Diallo, Malibongwe Tyilo, Athi-Patra
Ruga and Julia Raynham.
The call for applications goes to new media and digital artists (eg: sound, video, web,
installation, animators, photographers), designers (eg: graphic, fashion, architecture, industrial),
writers (eg: cultural researchers, music journalists, poets, literary authors, art historians,
theorists), artists working in film and broadcast media (eg: directors, producers,
cinematographers, editors, sound-engineers) performers (musicians, theatre makers, dancers,
choreographers); and is inclusive of those whose professional practice and skills cannot
easily be boxed into stereotypical categories of identification.

- In total 21 participants will be selected – seven in each Incubator.
- Applicants must be able to comit to the Incubator Programme in full (25 February – 15
August 2013); 40hrs/week in total, of which three days a week are face to face sessions

BRIEFLY. MOMENTS FROM FRIDAY NIGHT

Last Friday on the eve of the J&B Met I went to check out a little soirée that designer Gavin Rajah had put together at the Table Bay Hotel at the Waterfront. Besides drinks, diet inappropriate food (my diet), we were also treated to fashion shows by Jenny Le Roux (Habits), Uyanda Mbuli (Diamond Face Couture) and of course Gavin Rajah. I had fun and the fashion was lotsa fun too. I must say Uyanda was a bit of an education for me. I’m singling her out because let’s be honest here, it’s easy to be skeptical of people who become famous first and then become designers, in fact it’s probably healthy. But I actually didn’t hate her pieces. I remember seeing her stuff last year on some TV program, top shayela? and thinking to myself “how fucking awful”, but actually this time that was not the case. So well done to her and fuck me for those moments when the bitter fashion graduate in me hates on celebrity fashion ranges.

Now skattie I got there a bit late, so I’m not sure if the were other designers showing. There was also quite a bit of Peroni around and my friend Mak who does Peroni pr was there, so I assume the event was sponsored by Peroni. These are all things I probably should have asked. Thankfully this is not a journalistic blog skattie otherwise I’d have to fuck with time consuming shit like facts and research.

I also wish I had more pics for you because I saw a whole lot more designs than you’re seeing here, but the pics came out so fucking shit, some of the ones here are shit, but trust me the others were way shittier.  It was one of them days, I couldn’t get it together. Probably because after almost a month of observing an enjoyable 70% raw diet, on this specific day something came over me and I found myself shoving doughnuts down my throat for breakfast, at a McDonalds drive thru for lunch and at a KFC for a mid afternoon snack, by the time I'd settled into this event I was juggling macaroons of all colours straight down my gob. I was a muthafucking wreck. Anyway, those who’ve been around these parts for a while know what time it is. And to all the nu skatties, welcome to free shit, sometimes it's out of focus and sometimes it’s just kak photography, trust me you’ll live. And if some of you are grammar/punctuation nazis? Please, just please, no.

From top to bottom: 1 & 2 = Habits, 3 = Diamond Face Couture, 4 & 5 = Gavin Rajah, 6 = Guest

J&B MET 2013 PART 2 /// THE SKATTIE, WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK? AWARDS

This kind of mean post is always the worst one to put together for me dear skat, probably why I only do it only once a year, my previous one was a year ago, also with pics taken at the J&B, which is such a massive dress up party that one is bound to find these gems. but this kinda post really breaks my faggotty little heart. I like to think of myself as a radical optimist, I like to see the very fucking best in every1, yes even in people with apartheid era taste levels. But it has to be done, if not to help our fellow wo/man, then at least to warn future generations of those times when kak kak kak looks happen to otherwise good people.  To remind them/ourselves that long is the road from intention to execution, and while on that journey let’s keep our eyes on the road and stay away from the crack pipe.

So, because I just can't dzeal,  I’ve put together a jury of 3 fags (bubble bubble, toil and trouble), made up of myself, Fumi and Sandiblouse. We all know how patient, kind and understanding fags can be when it comes to these things. Should you find yourself nominated to be a  recipient of the Skattie What the Fucking Fuck? Award, don’t be mad, take the counseling, go home, meditate on it, talk to the God of your understanding, ask yourself, “what the fucking fuck was I thinking?” , and should life give you an opportunity to right these wrongs, make sure to get a second opinion. Actually fuck that, your friends and family obviously can’t be trusted, go ahead and get 99 opinions and work with that.

F: If you gonna go see-thru from midriff down, then please minca gel, please man
M: See? it happens to skinny girls too.
A: All hail the Empress Josephinia
F: *sigh* and on her way out of Mavericks she grabbed the first fag she could find and she headed for the races
S: We all have a little Ke$ha in us but this girl is so far ahead she has s/s 2014 Ke$ha on lock.

F: Forget Tweedledee and Tweedledum, we have Parfait and Pavlova over here
M: Instagrow - first you stick it on your weave, then you irrigate it, then it grows, see? easy.
S: Oh look the mirror didn't make her any different
S: Did she just take swim in a strawberry daiquiri?
F: The convention of girls who don't know when to stop
S: The J&B colours to a J&B event? Talk about brand activation.
F: He looks like might try to sell you snake oil later
S: That time when Gert got tired of getting his croissants from the bakery
M: "Hold on for a sec I'm getting a message from Dione Warwick"
M: "Nope, no it wasn't her"
F: And Gert checks one more time to see if the vortex is still intact
M: *must not look to the left, must not look at the nigger balls, must not look at the nigger balls, must not look at the nigger balls*
F: tired of being confused with a french lesbian, he decided to grow his armpit hair on his shoulders instead
S: *sigh*
F: I would love to see the original look that inspired this
M: Did no one tell her that she was supposed to actually climb out of the cake?
S: Where are my eggs? asked the ostrich
F: She represents a demographic that I feel I need to speak to.
S: She took the whole peplum thing way too far.
S: Look at that! Big Rich Texas is in town! Not.
F: A hat for your face? now that's a novel idea!
M: that time when her bird told her the ancestors loved her outfit
F: Aaaaaaaarrrrrhhhh me matey!
M: Before you leave the house take off the last thing you put on
M: *sigh*
F: *shakes head* *hands up in air*
F: Ladies, a day at the races usually means walking around on grass, those are not the shoes and that is certainly not the outfit.
M: Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir? Mocha-chocolata yaya.

F: Somewhere out there is a very very embarrassed teenage daughter
S: Bumblebees were also 'Made To Fly'

AND SOMETIMES ONE COMES ACROSS A NOMINEE THAT PERSONIFIES AN AWARD, A NOMINEE WHO HAS WORKED SO HARD ON THEIR OUTFIT THAT FOR THIS ONE EFFORT THEY DESERVE AN AWARD WORTHY OF THEIR ENTHUSIASM. RAISE YOUR DALI TAMBO PEOPLE OF THE SOUTH CUSHIONS TO OUR RECIPIENT OF THE 'SKATTIE, WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK? LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD'
F: He went past gladiator and headed straight for centaur.
S: One less cow in his dad's kraal
M: What not to do with lobola

J&B MET 2013 /// PART 1

Yesterday I spent my day at the JHB Met, oops sorry I mean J&B Met. I was there on Sunglass Hut’s invitation, so I spent most of my time at their marquee. Really awesome marquee by the way, great vaaarb, no bullshit. Except for like 4 pics, the pics below were all taken at the marquee. So thanks to SH for that. Last year I went on the media accreditation that one gets from the Met organisers and not to sound like an ungrateful little shit, but that general media accreditation is fucking depressing, it was/is literally only for general access, like zero access to the tents and their vip vibes. And I was soooo hungover on that day last year, like suicidal, and fat, really fat, fatter than i am now, and sitting outside the tents watching the beautiful people preening about didn’t help. Still gatecrashed thesabc marquee tho, and drowned myself in vodka. Of course on principle I hate all things vip, that shit is not of our time.  However, as we all know I suffer from paralyzing insecurities, and now that I am off the booze the only antidote for them is constant superficial validation, and being on the right side of the velvet rope does the trick. Pathetic I know, one’s self worth should not b attached to external shit, but for today we leave the healthy thinking to the emotionally stable, well adjusted and most probably uninteresting.

Anyway, the coolest thing about the SH marquee? The ticket came with a R2000 SH voucher. So guess who is going shopping today? Okay, just showing off. Enjoy the images, these are the looks/moments I enjoyed. Tomorrow or the day after I’ll post pics of the other moments, you know, the rachets, the unfortunate, the missteps, the ones that took a wrong turn on the road from intention to execution, the 2013 recipients of the Skattie, What the Fucking Fuck? Awards.

p.s. this year's theme was Made To Fly
